Drang Drung Glacier at Pensi-La

Uncategorized

Drang Drung Glacier flows east from Doda Peak to form the Stod River which eventually joins Zanskar River downstream.

Pensi La is the highest mountain pass between Kargil and Padum in Zanskar. It acts as a gateway to Zanskar.
Located around 25Km from Julidok village in Rangdum Valley, the terrain is barren and surroundings are beautiful. I did an impromptu stop of two days in the Julidok village. The remoteness and of course the beautiful surroundings were what made me stay.

The picture is taken from the top of the Pensi La, looking east towards the  Drang Drung Glacier.

Zigzagging Through

Tributaries zig zag down the mountain and merge into a larger river

During summer months as the snow melts, it gives rise to numerous rivulets which zigzag down the mountains to form streams and culminate into rivers. The valleys of Zanskar are full of such small streams originating in melting snows .
During summers, a lot of wild life makes these meadows their home due to plentiful grass and water.
While riding through the Suru Valley towards Rangdum, I came across this small valley branching off on the side with several small rivulets zigzagging though the greens.

Long Lonely Walk

Uncategorized

A monk takes a long lonely walk from Julidok Vilage towards the Rangdum Monastery in Rangdum Valley, Zanskar

Julidok is a small village halfway between Kargil and Padum, a town in Zanskar.
The village is situated next to Suru River and the valley floor is covered with moraine. On one end of the valley is situated the Randum Monastery atop a small hill. I did an impromptu stop of two days in this place. The remoteness and of course the beautiful surroundings were what made me stay.
The residents of the Monastery are quite welcoming and one can spend sometime visiting the inside with its small museum. I for myself used their courtyard for a nice afternoon siesta. Seeing me lie down, an elderly monk was nice enough to give me his shawl to cover myself.

Morning Light

Morning Light adorns the peaks of surrounding the barren plains of Rangdum in Zanskar, Ladakh

Rangdum is a small valley halfway between Kargil and Padum, a town in Zanskar.
The Julidok village is situated next to Suru River and the valley floor is covered with moraine. I did an impromptu stop of two days in this place. The remoteness and of course the beautiful surroundings were what made me stay.
Early morning as the sun starts coming up, the snow peaks get the first rays illuminating them much before the surrounding. Standing in the middle of dark valley with the tops slowly getting illuminated is a surreal feeling.

Horses running free in the high altitude meadows of Zanskar, Ladakh

The valleys of Zanskar are full of meadows irrigated by melting glaciers. During summers, a lot of wild life makes these meadows their home due to plentiful grass and water.
While riding though one such meadow, I came across a herd of horses galloping across the valley.I had a split second to stop my bike, fish out the camera and take this shot.
There was a bigger white stallion who was leading the pack. Unfortunately that did not get captured in this frame.
