Desert Greens

Barren mountains engulfing the green fields of Sakti Valley near Leh.

Sakti is a small village near Leh on the way to Panging Lake. It is located before the road rises towards the high pass of Chang La. The alternate road to Nubra valley over the Wari La diverges from here. Two monasteries – Chemrey and Takthok are also located along this valley.

The valley presents a dramatic contract of lush green cultivated land surrounded by barren mountains rising all around it.

This picture was taken which I was on a bike ride in Leh going to Pangong Lake. As the road zigzags up towards Chang La, the green valley gives way to rocky mountain side. On your left is a sharp drop to the valley floor. As I was riding up, storm clouds gathered over the horizon. Closer to me the thin clouds drew patterns on the low lying mountains.

Blurred Memories

The Himalayan peaks of Nun-KunĀ  showing through a fogged window in Rangdun, Zanskar Valley.

Rangdum is a small valley halfway between Kargil and Padum, a town in Zanskar. I did an impromptu stop of two days at the Julidok village which is located next to Suru River.

While it was the peak of summer, it was still cold enough for the windows to get fogged up at night. After a morning walk around the valley taking pictures, I went back to the warmth of my quilt and thorough the window watched the sun slowly bath the valley in light.

Inverted Impressions

Snowy mountains reflecting in a seasonal glacial lake in the Upper Suru Valley.

During summer season, as the snow melts numerous small stream flow down the mountain slopes and create small and large glacial lakes on valley floors. These lakes and the green grass of the meadows attract both humans and animals alike.

While riding through the Suru Valley towards Rangdum, I came across this lake which reflected the beauty of the surroundings.

Flowers Galore

A meadow in Yumthang Valley covered with wild flowers amidst a row of fluttering Buddhist prayer flags.
Come spring and the Yumthang Valley in North Sikkim becomes home to countless wild flowers adorning the valley with all hues of the spectrum. While the slopes of the valley are full of flowering trees and shrubs like Primula and Rhododendrons, it is the river side meadows which accentuate the beauty of the valley. The tiny wild flowers carpet the meadow weaving an intricate pattern of randomness.
As I was walking down the meadow towards the river, the flowers bordered by the prayer flags and a backdrop of smokey mountains presents a beautiful frame just waiting to be captured.

Zigzagging Through

Tributaries zig zag down the mountain and merge into a larger river

During summer months as the snow melts, it gives rise to numerous rivulets which zigzag down the mountains to form streams and culminate into rivers. The valleys of Zanskar are full of such small streams originating in melting snows .
During summers, a lot of wild life makes these meadows their home due to plentiful grass and water.
While riding through the Suru Valley towards Rangdum, I came across this small valley branching off on the side with several small rivulets zigzagging though the greens.
