Fishing in the Lachen

A local boy throws a net to catch fishes in the Lachen River, North Sikkim
The road to Lachen and ahead to Gurudongmar Lake snakes along the Lachen River cutting through deep valleys and postcard views. Going downstream the river merges into Lachung and then Teesta River.
As one goes higher and deeper into North Sikkim, the fishing gets better and fishes tastier. These were the words of a local boy whom I met on my way to Gurudongmar Lake.
We had stopped at a small clearing used for trucks to load river sand. The boy had traveled from Chungthang with a group of friends to spend the day fishing. By the time I met him, they were about to call it a day with their catch which was a large bucket full of 6″ to 8″ long fishes.

Old fisherman resting besides his boat

Taken on Puri beach adjacent to a fishing village

I was visiting Puri and took an early morning stroll on the beach. Towards the end of the beach there is a fishing village and fishing boats were returning after a night out at the sea.

Amidst the chaos and commotion associated with the returning of boats after a night of fishing, this old man was relaxing besides his boat – at peace with himself and the world around him

Fishing boats returning home

I was visiting Puri and took an early morning stroll on the beach. Towards the end of the beach there is a fishing village and fishing boats were returning after a night out at the sea.

The boats seem to be hanging out in the sea waiting for their turn to come in for landing and unload their fish.

The incoming waves with the boats lined up behind made for an interesting shot.

Fishermen in Making

Taken on Puri beach adjacent to a fishing village

I was visiting Puri and took an early morning stroll on the beach. Towards the end of the beach there is a fishing village and fishing boats were returning after a night out at the sea.

While watching the boats come in and unload their catch for the day, I saw these two kids practicing how to launch the boat against the waves. Each time they would push the boat out, the waves would push it back.

This is a picture of one such attempt with the sun, still below the horizon, painting the sky in morning hues.
